The Wenner-Gren Dissertation Fieldwork Grant supports doctoral research in all four subfields of anthropology with grants of up to $25,000. It is one of the most prestigious and competitive funding sources for anthropology dissertations globally. Two deadlines are offered each year: May 1 and November 1. The foundation has funded anthropological research for over 80 years.
Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program in anthropology, be affiliated with anthropology by way of their advisors, or hold a previous degree in anthropology. Applicants of any nationality or institutional affiliation may apply. Applicants must designate a dissertation advisor or other scholar from the same institution who will take responsibility for supervising the project. To receive an award, applicants must fulfill all of their program's doctoral degree requirements, other than the dissertation/thesis, before the start date listed on their application form.
Applications are submitted through the Wenner-Gren Foundation online portal. A full dissertation proposal, budget, letters of support from the dissertation advisor, and evidence of IRB or equivalent ethical approval are required.
