Formerly known as the Student Excellence in Archaeology Scholarship, this SAA award was established in 2010 to improve recruitment and retention of underrepresented students in archaeology. Up to $3,000 is awarded to one or two recipients annually. The scholarship supports archaeological training or participation in a research program. Applications open each October.
Open to historically minoritized and underrepresented students (including but not limited to African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian American individuals) who are residents of the U.S. or Canada and enrolled in an accredited university in the U.S. or Canada. Both undergraduate and first- or second-year graduate students pursuing an archaeology degree may apply.
Applicants must submit a complete application through the SAA portal by January 31, demonstrating membership in a historically underrepresented group and enrollment in an archaeology program. Funds may be used for tuition, travel, housing, books, equipment, and other training costs.
